Game of Thrones

Santa thought it would be a good idea to give me the entire box set of Game of Thrones, Series 1.  I have heard a lot about Game of Thrones (all good stuff), and I admit I've been curious about the television series.  However, I've never expressed an interest in seeing it so I was really surprised when it was sitting under the Christmas tree for me but I wasn't complaining.

It is important to note that I love movies and stories about knights, kings, dragons, and especially about stories were the damsels aren't in distress but kicking butt.  My favorite movies include the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Excalibur, Willow, etc.  So, it makes sense that I would want to see this movie and I was anxious to pop it into the player, wrap myself in my fuzzy blanket, and melt into the couch as I watch the story unfold.  In fact, I decided to carve out time last weekend to do this very thing, and Wicked Pixie and Naughty Pixie were going to join me.

You can imagine my horror when, in the first hour, there was plenty of full frontal nudity and graphic sex scenes.  Was this a series about knights, kings, and dragons or was this simply porn? It was difficult to tell even after using my remote to jump through the sex scenes and viewing several episodes.  Even with the one scene where there was actually male full front nudity (and only one scene), it quickly become obvious this movie was written, directed, and produced by a bunch of guys who probably couldn't get a date in high school, while college was spent drinking beer and dreaming about getting lucky with the popular female co-eds (yet never actually getting lucky).  Apparently, they decided to show us those dreams by creating this series and making the pretty girls be nude for most of the show or be marginalized in sex scenes.  In those mini porn moments, I truly felt sorry for the actors.

Yet, much to my chagrin, the story got me.  By episode 5, I was sucked into the storyline.  Characters died that I would never have dreamed would die, while story lines took a twist that caught me off guard.  There were women I wanted to reach into the television and punch in the face, and there were men who I would have hugged (and this Pixie doesn't hug) if I could.  Now I cannot wait until Series 2 is released in February.

Weird how that happens... How a person can be so horrified by the initial starting of a story - only to be drawn in so deep you don't want the story to end.  I truly didn't recognize how far I was into the story until I popped in the last disc into the player.  The temptation to pout definitely rose when the last episode played, but immense relief replaced it when I found out Series 2 would be available in a month.  I love stories that do that to me.

So, if you can get passed the mini porn parts - I recommend this series.  The story is interesting.  The actors are excellent (though there were a few characters that were written so 1-dimensionally that it was criminal).  And the twists are genuine.  Naughty Pixie kept saying, "I hope that so-so gets it in the end" and I would shout, "Are you kidding me?!?!" when one scene played out.  There are moments when you go, "Ewwww!" and scenes where you shout "Yes!".  This all translates into a box set you really should consider.

  1. You do know the series is based off a series of books, right?

My hubby has read the first four books and they are just as graphic and the T.V. series!

    1. Yep, but I always wait to read the books until after I see the shows/movies. Otherwise, I watch the movies with too many expectations and get disappointed. I did that with the Harry Potter series, and I was able to treat the movies and books as two separate stories. When I read the books first - I'm unable to do that.
